What is this?

The Grade Calculator answers the question every student types into Google in finals week: what do I need on the final to get the grade I want. It supports two modes: a current weighted grade from your category scores, and a final-exam target that tells you exactly what score secures your target letter grade.

Final-exam mode: enter your current grade, the weight of the final (commonly 20 to 40 percent of the course), and your target. A student at 82 percent with a 30 percent final wanting an 80 overall needs 74.7 percent on the final - a very different feeling from needing 95. The tool shows the minimum score instantly, so you can allocate study time rationally across subjects.

Current-grade mode takes your syllabus categories - homework 20 percent at 95, midterms 30 percent at 78, labs 10 percent at 88 - and computes the weighted running grade before the final. Enter category weights and scores for what has been graded so far; the tool handles the arithmetic your LMS may not display clearly.

Letter-grade bands shown in the result follow the standard US scale: A at 90, B at 80, C at 70, D at 60. UK and EU universities use different classifications (First, 2:1, 2:2), so treat the letter mapping as US-specific.

All computation stays on your device.

Formula

Final needed = (Target - Current x (1 - FinalWeight)) / FinalWeight
Weighted grade = Sum(Score x Weight) / Sum(Weights)

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need on my final to get an A?
Needed = (90 - Current x (1 - FinalWeight)) / FinalWeight. If you have 88% with a 25% final, you need about 96% on the final. The calculator does this instantly.
How does weighted grading work?
Each category contributes its score times its syllabus weight, divided by total weights entered. Homework at 95 in a 20% category adds 19 points to the weighted grade.
