What is this?

The VAT Calculator handles value-added tax for the UK and every EU member state. Unlike US sales tax, VAT is already included in the shelf price, so the two daily questions are: what is the VAT inside a price I paid, and what will the price be if I add VAT to a net amount. The tool does both, at the standard rates people actually search: UK 20 percent, Germany 19 percent, France 20 percent, Ireland 23 percent, Spain 21 percent, Italy 22 percent, Netherlands 21 percent, and any custom rate.

Use Remove VAT on a receipt or invoice total to split it into net amount and VAT - the split businesses need for VAT returns and bookkeeping. Use Add VAT to quote a net price with tax added for an invoice. The reduce-rate variants (UK 5 percent, Germany 7 percent, France 5.5 percent, Ireland 13.5 percent) cover groceries, books, and other reduced-rate goods - enter them as the custom rate.

Worked example: a UK receipt of 120.00 pounds contains 20.00 pounds of VAT at the 20 percent standard rate, leaving 100.00 net - VAT is 20 percent of the net, not of the gross, which is the step most people get wrong doing it mentally.

Calculations run entirely in your browser, so invoice figures never leave your device.

Formula

Remove VAT: Net = Gross / (1 + Rate/100); VAT = Gross - Net
Add VAT: Gross = Net x (1 + Rate/100)
