Sales Tax Calculator

Add or remove US sales tax by state and rate - before-tax price, tax amount, and total.

What is this?

The Sales Tax Calculator answers the two questions every US shopper and small-business owner asks: what will this cost after tax, and what was the pre-tax price of a receipt total. It supports all state rates plus local additions - just enter the combined rate for the location, from 0 percent in Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon to over 9 percent in parts of California, Tennessee, and Louisiana.

Mode 1 adds tax: enter the sticker price and the combined state-plus-local rate to get the tax amount and final price at checkout. Mode 2 removes tax: enter a receipt total and the rate to recover the pre-tax price and the tax portion - the calculation businesses need for bookkeeping and sales reporting.

Combined rates vary within states because counties and cities add local tax on top of the state rate. The detail output shows the exact tax amount separately, which is what registers and accounting records require. For VAT-style all-inclusive pricing used in Europe, use the VAT Calculator instead - sales tax is added at checkout, while VAT is already inside the shelf price.

Every calculation runs locally in your browser; nothing is stored or submitted.

Formula

Add tax: Total = Price x (1 + Rate/100); Tax = Total - Price
Remove tax: Price = Total / (1 + Rate/100); Tax = Total - Price

Which US states have no sales tax?
