What is this?

The Character Counter breaks any text into its component characters: total length, letters split into upper and lower case, digits, spaces, and special characters. Where the Word Counter answers how long, this tool answers what the text is made of - which is exactly what form validation, password policies, and data cleaning need.

The categories are mutually exclusive and sum to the total: letters (A-Z, a-z), digits (0-9), whitespace, and everything else classed as special (punctuation, symbols, emoji, accented letters). A password such as Tr0ub4dor&3 reads as 6 letters (3 upper), 3 digits, and 1 special character - the profile most password rules require. Character limits on forms and APIs count the raw total, including spaces and newlines, so the first number is the one to watch.

Typical uses include checking meta tags against search-engine limits, validating usernames that allow only certain character classes, auditing CSV fields for stray symbols, and verifying that translated strings will fit a fixed-width layout. Combining it with the Word Counter gives both the macro and micro view of the same text.

Everything is computed locally in your browser; pasted text never touches a server.

Formula

Total = Letters + Digits + Spaces + Special
Special = any character outside A-Z, a-z, 0-9, and whitespace
