Measure the length and width of the space and pick the unit you measured in - feet, metres, inches, or yards; the calculator converts to feet internally, so mixing units is safe. A 12 ft by 15 ft room is 180 sq ft; the same room measured as 3.66 m by 4.57 m arrives at the same answer. The acre conversion is included because land and lots are usually priced per acre (43,560 sq ft), and the sq m figure matches international listings.

For L-shaped rooms, split the space into two rectangles, calculate each, and add the results. Add 5-10 percent to material orders for cuts and waste - flooring pros order 180 x 1.1 = about 198 sq ft for a 180 sq ft room. Remember the area-scaling trap: doubling both sides quadruples the area.
